Who are the members of the Japanese Academy of Budo?
Among the regular members of the society are university researchers in the fields of humanities and natural sciences, high school teachers, budo instructors, and budo enthusiasts. There is a wide range of members, and due to the nature of budo, the age range is from those from their 20s to their 80s. Additionally, there is a system for student membership (excluding graduate students) that allows students to join as well.
What kind of information can be obtained from the Academy?
Each member is sent a copy of the Japanese Academy of Budo’s “Research Journal of Budo”. Also, a conference is held once a year with presentations on judo, kendo, karatedo, kyudo, sumo, and naginata. The contents of presentations are broken down into three categories: human sciences, natural sciences, and budo instruction. Furthermore, at the conference there is a symposium and research meetings from which participants can get information related to budo. In addition, various types of information, such as newsletters, are provided.
In 2003, a new Specialist Subcommittee on Budo Culture for the Disabled was established which made it possible to obtain information related to budo for people with disabilities.
How do you become a member of the Academy?
One requirement is that members must be budo researchers. There is no particular question about the level of research or current affiliation, but a recommendation from a member of the society is required. For more details, please refer to the “How to Join” section above.
Can non-members take part in the Japanese Academy of Budo Conference?
Participation in the conference as a temporary member is possible. Depending on the nature of the event, some conferences may also be open to the public. Please refer to the announcements for each conference. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Academy office.
